The oldest Boot Hill Cemetery west of the Mississippi, located at 18th and Fort St., commemorates early residents of Hays City. Approximately 79 rabble-rousers and soiled doves were buried here after untimely deaths, from 1867 – 1874.
The second cemetery in Hays, Mount Allen Cemetery, is located at 27th and Vine. Martin Allen, a local businessman, could not bear for his daughter Clara to be buried alongside criminals after her death at the age of 13 from scarlet fever. Allen donated some of his personal land to create the ‘proper’ cemetery, and his daughter was the first to be buried there.
